The Young Poland Project: The Renaissance of Arts and Crafts Movement, 1890-1918

The Young Poland Project: The Renaissance of Arts and Crafts Movement, 1890-1918, is the result of the cooperation between the National Museum in Kraków, William Morris Gallery and the Institute of Polish Culture in London, the purpose of which is to organise the world's first exhibition promoting applied arts and architecture of the Young Poland period in London with the publication of the first international publication devoted entirely to the Polish applied arts, crafts and architecture of the Young Poland period, prepared especially for foreign, mainly British, audiences.
The project is based on a three-year plan and covers the years 2020 -2022. In 2020, the project includes:

1. Substantive (conceptual) activities related to the development of the target version of the scenario of the EXHIBITION entitled "Young Poland: The Renaissance of Arts and Crafts Movement, 1890-1918" and preparatory works.
The exhibition, presenting the unique features of artistic craftsmanship and architecture of the Young Poland period, will provide the first opportunity to introduce the English audience to the subject of Polish applied arts of that period. The planned exhibition will combine traditional exhibition forms with modern multimedia techniques, acting as an intermediary between objects, to create a continuous, interesting narrative. The exhibition will show more than 180 objects of the Young Poland movement, from paintings, drawings and photographs from the period, through the best examples of furniture, embroidery, kilims, lace and artistic ceramics to everyday objects of material culture of Highlanders from the Podhale region, which had a great impact on the national revival of crafts. Iconic exhibits made by canonical artists will be juxtaposed with the works of lesser known, but equally original artists, who deserve to be appreciated in Poland and internationally. Thus, visitors to our exhibition will have the opportunity to see examples of the most exceptional decorative arts that best embody the Young Poland period and its ethos of equating the status of applied arts with beautiful ones.

2. Popularisation measures.
- publishing measures related to the production of popular science publications devoted to the subject of applied arts of the Young Poland era
This will be the first English-language publication dedicated entirely to Polish applied arts and crafts around 1900, prepared especially for international and mainly British audiences, published by a leading international publisher.
- information measures related to the preparation of a dedicated English-language website
The website related to the theme of Young Poland will include information about the exhibition undertaking, as well as the programme of accompanying events and teaser audiovisual materials. The website will be advertised through social partner channels and run by William Morris Gallery.
