Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
What can I borrow?
Applications for any of the museum’s holdings may be submitted, but the loan decision is taken on the basis of opinion statements issued by those in charge of the collections and by conservators, and also subject to staff availability at the National Museum in Krakow, dates, the museum’s own exhibition plans, and the availability and state of preservation of the object.
How far in advance should I submit my application?
At least six months for destinations within Poland and one year in the case of destinations abroad.
How should I submit my application?
Please send a formal application using the internet application form at: www.mnk.pl under the tab The Museum > Loans from the MNK. Alternatively, you may submit your application in writing to the Director of the National Museum in Krakow, al. 3-go Maja 1, 30-062 Kraków. Please list the items for which you are applying, the timeframe of the project or exhibition, and detailed information about the project, and be sure to observe the six-month advance period for domestic loans and year for foreign loans.
How long can I borrow the object for?
Objects may be loaned for periods of up to three years (with the exception of particularly sensitive objects – papers and fabrics). Thereafter, every three years from the loan start date a review will be conducted and the loan agreement renewed. As a rule, the museum does not permit long-term loans of its holdings outside Poland. Such loans must be negotiated on an individual basis.
Does the National Museum in Krakow always send a courier?
We assess every loan and take a decision on appropriate security, transport and environmental conditions. This assessment will also include the decision on whether an MNK courier needs to travel with the loan and install it at its destination. As a rule, however, for domestic loans the work of the courier is the responsibility of the Borrower. In the case of foreign loans, an accompanying courier from the MNK is mandatory.
