  STANISŁAW LESZCZYŃSKI AND AUGUST II WETTIN

  The Department of Prints and Engravings of the Princes Czartoryski Museum presents another exhibition of engravings from its collections. The portraits and scenes of celebrations and events are all linked to the reigns of two rial elected kings of Poland. The engravings displayed are the works of outstanding Dutch, Augsburg, and French artists of the 17th to 19th centuries.

  XX + XXI. POLISH ART GALLERY - Sculpture

  The XX + XXI. Polish Art Gallery will be expanding in June with a new space dedicated to sculpture of the mid-20th century onwards. This space will be the last on the visitors’ route through the gallery, and will be a complement to the 20th century sculpture gallery located in in the hall on the second floor, and thus will blend the multifaceted history of modern Polish sculpture into a single whole.

  The Vistula, Queen of Polish Rivers

  Near the borders of Poland in the province of Lesser Poland there stands a high and rocky crag of the Tatra mountains […] whence the river Vistula flows from its source and meanders through the centre of the Crown Kingdom of Poland northwards to the very city of Gdańsk, where its fresh waters into the salt water of the Baltic Sea flow and intermingle. Indeed, this one among all others in the Kingdom of Poland is known as the Head of All Rivers. These words about the Vistula and a woodcut showing a landscape with Barania Góra (Ram Mountain), where the sources of the Vistula are located, open an exhibition dedicated to this queen of Polish rivers and portrayals of it in historic books, maps, and plans. A characterisation of the Vistula and an engraving of it were included in a 1703 edition of Hieronim Morsztyn’s work “Antypasty Małżeńskie (Matrimonial Appetisers)”, a collection of three amorous tales first published in 1650.

  On a return visit. The decorative panel by Jan Rembowski from the Dłuski Sanatorium in Zakopane

  After almost 100 years, a decorative panel entitled Pochód górali (Procession of Highlanders) painted by the artist Jan Rembowski (1879–1923) will return temporarily to Zakopane. This monumental work of art was initially part of the artistic interior design of the theatre room in the main building of the sanatorium run by Bronisława and Kazimierz Dłuski in Kościelisko.

  ELECTION KINGS AND DIPLOMACY part 2

  The Cabinet of Prints and Drawings of the Princes Czartoryski Museum presents a new set of prints from the collection. Portraits and representations of various ceremonies are connected with the reign of the elected kings of Poland, this time starting with John II Casimir Vasa. The exhibited engravings are works by outstanding Dutch, Italian, German, Gdansk and Augsburg artists of the 17th-18th centuries.

  Medal in private. Private Medals in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

  From their very beginnings, medals have been close to the hearts of those who receive them – quite literally! They were often meant to be held in the hand, and to be passed from hand to hand (either in official ceremonies or during private events), or sent by post, or even … tossed out into gathered crowds. They were used in a variety of ways also. They were sometimes piously stored in small cases, or ostentatiously worn on the chest, everyday items were decorated with them, or they were interred in graves along with the deceased. They accompanied people during family celebrations such as baptisms, weddings and funerals, but also lent a celebratory touch to official ceremonies. Their purpose was to commemorate events and individuals, thus they were mementos of a personal nature in every sense.
