  Ornaments on the Mantlepiece. Display of the Painting by Józef Mehoffer

  The works from the easel of Józef Mehoffer include still lifes alongside his quite numerous landscapes, genre and allegorical scenes. Although they are only a complementary strand in the rich iconosphere of the artist’s paintings and more modest in number, they are a nevertheless significant one. They are an expression of an important feature of his creative personality, or of his character in general – a tendency to devote his attention to small everyday motifs, to notice their inconspicuous beauty and decorative qualities, sometimes hidden mystical meanings, and their importance arising from their connection with specific people and situations. Mehoffer’s still lifes are thus images of slices of reality reproduced with feeling, and each is characterised by a specific, intense emotional shade.

  THE EDWARD GOLDSTEIN LIBRARY

  The library of Edward Goldstein (1844–1920) is part of a collection donated to the National Museum in Krakow in 1909 by a doctor, anthropologist and collector, who lived for over 40 years in emigration in Paris, where he sought refuge following the January Uprising.

  Memento vitae. Paintings by Józef Czapski in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow

  “Friday. I only wrote on the cover of this new notebook: memento! Because here I wasn’t talking only about memento Mori, but about memento Vitae, which still awaits me, whether this life will last a day or a few years!” – wrote 91-year-old Józef Czapski in one of his last diaries.
  
  The exhibition Memento vitae is the first presentation of the entire collection of Czapski’s paintings in the collections of the National Museum in Krakow.

The wartime fate of The Polyptych of Lusina

A comprehensive examination of source materials documenting the wartime fate of the polyptych from Lusina has uncovered a wealth of previously unpublished information. The investigation encompassed Polish-, English-, and German-language historical documents from the World War II era and the years that followed, including archives held at the National Museum in Krakow and the National Museum in Warsaw. American military archives, war and post-war periodicals, exhibition catalogs, and literature describing the plundering art policies of Nazi Germany, particularly the activities of the Dienststelle Mühlmann (Mühlmann Office) in Krakow, were also thoroughly scrutinized.

Verlorenen Teile des Polyptychon aus Lusina

Zwei Flachreliefs, die ursprünglich zu einem spätgotischen Altarretabel (sog. Polyptychon aus Lusina) gehörten, gelten als Kriegsverluste des Nationalmuseums in Kraków. Das Ziel des Projekts, das im Rahmen des Programms „Badanie polskich strat wojennych“ („Erforschung polnischer Kriegsverluste“) realisiert wird, ist es, die Ergebnisse der technologischen Untersuchungen erhaltener Flügel des Polyptychons einem breiten Publikum zur Verfügung zu stellen.

The Myth of the Golden Fleece

The Golden Fleece, the title motif of the Georgia exhibition, derives from the oldest accounts of Greek mythology. It is an extraordinary tale of the mad courage of a few dozen Greek adventurers lured by tales of a land where the golden fleece (undoubtedly synonymous with greater riches) was stored. The heroes set out into the unknown in the hope of reaching this mythical place and capturing this gold. Imagine how ancient those times were, when even to the Greeks the Black Sea seemed to be a body of water of unrecognised size, and the lands to the north of it remained unknown. In ancient times, this story was mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey and by Pindar in his Fourth Pythian Ode.
