What arouses great interest of thousands of visitors is thematic exhibitions. The most popular displays included: Self-portrait of the Poles, The Art of the ‘Art’ Circles, Between Mount Giewont and Parnassus and Images of Death in the Polish Art of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Magnificent presentations of foreign art, including works by Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, pieces from Reinholdt Würth's collection and the French Impressionists, also enjoyed great popularity; the latter visited by over 140,000 viewers.
Large monographic exhibitions presented works by Teodor Axentowicz, Piotr Michałowski, Henryk Rodakowski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Witold Wojtkiewicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. The cycle Opus Magnum, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Museum, exhibited - on an unprecedented scale - the monumental works of Jan Matejko, Józef Mehoffer and Wyspiański. These exhibitions were visited by a total of more than 100,000 viewers.
Retrospectives introduced the audience to the work of contemporary painters such as Tadeusz Brzozowski, Tadeusz Kantor, Jan Lebenstein and Andrzej Wróblewski, and sculptors - Jerzy Bereś and Alina Szapocznikow.
Józef Czapski and Marek Rostworowski were honoured with exhibitions of biographical nature.
