Two 17th-century Dutch portraits in the NMK collections
Thanks to the financial support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the National Museum in Krakow has acquired two 17th-century Dutch portraits of women for its European art collection displayed at the EUROPEUM.
Portrait of a Lady by Caspar Netscher (1682) was presented during the Night of Museums 2015 (on 15 May) and remained on display until 5 July.
This subtly painted image is characteristic of the Dutch art in the second half of the 17th century, with its fashion for impressive and sophisticated portraits of elegant ladies and gentlemen, usually depicted against a background of curtains and a view of a park or a garden, inspired by French and English painting.
This autumn (23 October to 7 December) we will present a painting titled Portrait of a Woman with a Book (Portrait of a Dutch Patrician Woman) dating back to 1636, authored by Willem W. van Vliet.
Both portraits – distinguished by their high artistic value – perfectly complement the exhibition of foreign painting displayed in the EUROPEUM, where they will be presented along with other Dutch images of the era.
The paintings have been purchased thanks to the financial support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the programme "Collections - priority 4 - Museum collections".
