  Zygmunt Rytka. To Whom Does the Cosmos Belong?

  To Whom Does the Cosmos Belong? is the first exhibition of the works of Zygmunt Rytka to have been realised by utilising the late artist’s digitised archive. The structural starting point for the exhibition is the Photovision series, the main part of which was created between 1978–1983. This was a period spanning the end of the Gierek era, with its attempts at creating a socialist consumer society; subsequent strikes and the struggle for the legalisation of the Solidarity labour movement; and the declaration and imposition of martial law in Poland, accompanied by increasing propaganda and manipulation of mass media through information channels controlled by the regime. During this time, Rytka embarked on a project oriented around photographing his television screen. He took more than 5,000 pictures from this vantage, the majority of which have never been published. These photographs capture not only the political and cultural climate of Poland in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but they also transcend literality, forming a stream of unsettling images, as if unspooling from the collective consciousness of modern society.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please be informed that six employees of the National Museum in Krakow have tested positive for coronavirus*. All those infected belong to the staff of the Technical Department who have had no contacts with visitors. They all feel good.

The infected individuals and other staff who have been in direct contact with them have been quarantined, excluded from work or they work remotely and do not stay at the Museum buildings. Other people who might have been potentially infected are being gradually tested in order to exclude the suspicion of virus infection.

The National Museum in Krakow is in regular contact with the Province Unit of the State Sanitary Inspection and complies with its guidelines. In order to ensure safety and eliminate risks, the Main Building of the Museum, where the Technical Department is housed, is closed to visitors until revoked.

About the branch

The history of the Princes Czartoryski Museum in Kraków began in the City Arsenal in 1874, initiated by Prince Władysław Czartoryski. At that time the building, together with the towers Stolarska and Ciesielska, were handed over for museum purposes, which have been pursued to this day.

"Spektrum" project

The National Museum in Krakow is the leader of the "Spektrum" project under "Erasmus+ Youth. Action 2 - Strategic Partnerships". The NMK runs the "Spektrum" project drawing on the rich and long-standing experience of European partners in working with people on the autism spectrum. The main idea behind our efforts was to develop a strategy to make museums in Poland more friendly to people on the autism spectrum.

  Miracle of Light. Medieval Stained Glass in Poland

  In the Middle Ages, stained glass windows in churches were a huge artistic, technical and financial challenge, thus confirming the principals' prestige. Early Modern was a period when these stained glass windows were being removed, so that a very small percentage has survived to this day. Despite the fascination it stirred in the nineteenth century, stained glass was regarded as a decorative art and was much underrated, and still is - like the light and color that combine to create it - a phenomenon as fascinating as it is elusive.

This is why only part of the works is exposed, it is dim and the lack of labels is compensated by a special booklet. A group of international students living in Krakow accepted the challenge of their own interpretation of the Treasury and Wyspiański’s works. They invite you to discover the space together during three thematic walks.
