  On a return visit. The decorative panel by Jan Rembowski from the Dłuski Sanatorium in Zakopane

  After almost 100 years, a decorative panel entitled Pochód górali (Procession of Highlanders) painted by the artist Jan Rembowski (1879–1923) will return temporarily to Zakopane. This monumental work of art was initially part of the artistic interior design of the theatre room in the main building of the sanatorium run by Bronisława and Kazimierz Dłuski in Kościelisko.

  No retouching. Jan Matejko

  Watercolours allow for very little possibility of retouching of correcting the image created. Painting in this medium involves the application of thin, nearly transparent layers of paint to the paper, through which the substrate is visible. The technique requires precision and accuracy. Once painted, a given fragment can only be very slightly modified by the application of further layers or by the removal of some of the pigment.

  Medal in private. Private Medals in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

  From their very beginnings, medals have been close to the hearts of those who receive them – quite literally! They were often meant to be held in the hand, and to be passed from hand to hand (either in official ceremonies or during private events), or sent by post, or even … tossed out into gathered crowds. They were used in a variety of ways also. They were sometimes piously stored in small cases, or ostentatiously worn on the chest, everyday items were decorated with them, or they were interred in graves along with the deceased. They accompanied people during family celebrations such as baptisms, weddings and funerals, but also lent a celebratory touch to official ceremonies. Their purpose was to commemorate events and individuals, thus they were mementos of a personal nature in every sense.

  LELEWEL. The Polish engraver

  Joachim Lelewel (1786-1861), a distinguished Pole, politician and historian, went down in Polish historiography as the author of pioneering writings on history, the history of writing and bookselling, and the history of cartography and numismatics of antiquity and the Middle Ages. He worked in Warsaw and Vilnius, where he was professor of general history at the University of Vilnius. After the fall of the November Rising, as an emigrant he stayed briefly in France. In 1833 Belgium gave him shelter. He settled in Brussels, where he spent 28 years of his extremely busy life. His scientific achievements in numismatics from that time brought the Polish scholar international recognition and fame.

  KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI. PASSAGES...

  Exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints from the collection of the National Museum in Krakow

  "Leading the way is Hokusai, decrepit but wondrously young, full of fire and ardour…”[1] – was how Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was introduced by the eminent Polish collector Feliks Jasieński (1861–1929), a connoisseur and avid promoter of Japanese art.

  Aleksander Kotsis (1836-1877) Shades of Realism

  Born in Ludwinów near Krakow and living in Podgórze, Aleksander Kotsis was one of the most valued Polish painters working in the mid-19th century. His work is associated with artistic circles in Krakow, Vienna and Munich. Kotsis's art represents the direction of 19th-century realism, and its analogies can be found in the works of the so-called painters of the people, e.g. Jean-François Millet (1814-1875). What is also worth-noting is the Romantic perception of the world.

  The Origins. Ancient art gallery
