Watercolours allow for very little possibility of retouching of correcting the image created. Painting in this medium involves the application of thin, nearly transparent layers of paint to the paper, through which the substrate is visible. The technique requires precision and accuracy. Once painted, a given fragment can only be very slightly modified by the application of further layers or by the removal of some of the pigment.
This temporary exhibition was inspired by the stories told by watercolour sketches, watercolours, and miniatures painted by Jan Matejko, which show intimate historical scenes and figures set in a background of grand history and legends. The paintings feature delicate colours clear, gentle, calm, pastel tones. The exhibit is complemented by a display of the painter’s tools and drawings, including portrait, costume, and compositional sketches for the finished works. Many of the exhibits draw the viewer’s attention to the subsequent stages of the artist’s lesser-known creative output. Among these, viewer’s will certainly be drawn to the Self-portrait in miniature.
The exhibition has been assembled from the collections of the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum in Warsaw, as well as private collections.
