  Young Poland. Polish Art 1890-1918

  The exhibition “Young Poland”, dedicated to Poland and the development of Polish art in its “golden period“, that is between 1890 and 1918, will be held in Japan in 2025. It will tell a story about Polish history, the prologue to which will be outlined by works by Jan Matejko and Artur Grottger, as well as about Polish art, which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was not only part of the process of constructing national identity, but also ensured Poland’s presence and successes in the art salons of Europe despite the fact that Poland did not exist on maps of the time.

  Ornaments on the Mantlepiece. Display of the Painting by Józef Mehoffer

  The works from the easel of Józef Mehoffer include still lifes alongside his quite numerous landscapes, genre and allegorical scenes. Although they are only a complementary strand in the rich iconosphere of the artist’s paintings and more modest in number, they are a nevertheless significant one. They are an expression of an important feature of his creative personality, or of his character in general – a tendency to devote his attention to small everyday motifs, to notice their inconspicuous beauty and decorative qualities, sometimes hidden mystical meanings, and their importance arising from their connection with specific people and situations. Mehoffer’s still lifes are thus images of slices of reality reproduced with feeling, and each is characterised by a specific, intense emotional shade.

  The Singer. A Masterpiece by Józef Mehoffer

  Starting in the spring of 1894, Józef Mehoffer, who was on scholarship in Paris, began to devote his free time quite intensively to music. He owed this to having made the acquaintance at that time of the Janakowski sisters, Jadwiga (1871-1956), his future wife, and Wanda (1873-1940), who had come to the French capital to study art. They were from a landowning family in the Eastern Borderlands. Jadwiga developed her painting skills, while Wanda’s forte was singing. Both were particularly fascinated by the music of Richard Wagner

  The Geniuses of the cathedral Treasury

  The Cathedral Treasury at Wawel Castle is a Late Gothic, three-bay structure with a rib-vault ceiling, constructed in the late 15^th century, adjacent to the Cathedral on the northeast side. Since that time, it has been a place for storing precious historic objects of national significance such as sacred relics, priestly regalia, and other ceremonial items.

  The Manor House in Jankówka. Display of the painting by Józef Mehoffer

  In the autumn of 1907, fulfilling his dream of having a house with a garden, Józef Mehoffer purchased an 18th-century larch wood manor house in the village of Jankówka in the Pogórze Wielickie region, which he owned until 1917. It was located on a hill from which, as Jadwiga Mehoffer writes, “from above the crowns of the trees in the overgrown orchard a broad view spread out of the arcs of mountain ranges,” including the peaks of the Beskid mountains and at times even the Tatras.

  Józef Mehoffer - St. Sebastian and St. Maurice

  On 10 April 2019, the collection of the National Museum in Krakow gained Józef Mehoffer’s another design for the stained glass windows in the Fribourg Cathedral: The St. Sebastian and St. Maurice cartoon, which together with the St. Catherine and St. Barbara cartoon bought last year, form the design of the stained glass window The Martyrs — world-class masterpiece of monumental art, awarded the gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900.

  A lot of museums prepared exhibitions related to the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. The one at the National Museum in Krakow differs from them with a strict relationship with the historical thought of Józef Piłsudski – creator of Polish Legions, architect of independence, but also the strategist, publicist and inquiring analyst of Polish history.

  To Decorate a Village Church

  In 1942, Józef Mehoffer created wall paintings in the parish church erected to Stefan Szyller's design in the years 1930-1932 in Lubień – a small village called near Piotrków Trybunalski. This last mural decoration by Mehoffer, painted in extraordinary wartime circumstances, is not very famous; in fact, it is known only locally. An exhibition of photographs in the Józef Mehoffer House will soon bring it to light.
