  The Singer. A Masterpiece by Józef Mehoffer

  Starting in the spring of 1894, Józef Mehoffer, who was on scholarship in Paris, began to devote his free time quite intensively to music. He owed this to having made the acquaintance at that time of the Janakowski sisters, Jadwiga (1871-1956), his future wife, and Wanda (1873-1940), who had come to the French capital to study art. They were from a landowning family in the Eastern Borderlands. Jadwiga developed her painting skills, while Wanda’s forte was singing. Both were particularly fascinated by the music of Richard Wagner

  Beginnings of print in the Polish lands. The first printers and their books

  The beginnings of print in the Polish lands date back to the mid-15^th  century and are associated with the arrival of itinerant German printers who had reach the land situated along the Vistula river in their search for work. The main centre of their activity was Kraków and the first well-known printer to operate there was Kaspar Straube.

  On a return visit. The decorative panels by Jan Rembowski from the Dłuski Sanatorium in Zakopane

  After almost 100 years, more decorative panels painted by the artist Jan Rembowski (1879–1923), following the panel Pochód górali (Procession of Highlanders), will return temporarily to Zakopane. The two monumental works entitled Pochód dzieci góralskich (Procession of Highlander Children) and Pochód góralek (Procession of Highlander Women) were initially part of the artistic interior design of the theatre room in the main building of the sanatorium operated by Bronisława and Kazimierz Dłuski in Kościelisko.

  Stanisław August Poniatowski. The Enlightened King

  On the occasion of the 290th anniversary of the birth (17 January 1732), 258th anniversary of the coronation (25 November 1764), and 227the anniversary of the abdication (25 November 1795) of king Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last ruler of the Republic of Two Nations also known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the National Museum in Krakow invites visitors to an exhibition presenting items related the life and reign of the king.

  ELECTED KINGS – THE WETTINS

  The Graphic Arts Room of the Princes Czartoryski Museum presents a new set of etchings from its collections. These portraits and illustrations of various events and ceremonies are associated with the reign of the elected kings of Poland, the Wettin dynasty. The works presented were created by
  outstanding artists of the 17^th and 18^th centuries, including Dutch, Italian, and Germain artists, including from the Augsburg school.

  Mirys. Portraits

  The now largely forgotten Augustyn Mirys (1700-1790) was one of the most fascinating painters active in the late Baroque period in Poland. Scottish by descent but born in France and undertaking professional activity in Italy, he ultimately settled in Poland, where he spent the remainder of his life creating numerous works for the aristocratic elite of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The exhibition being presented at the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace brings together his finest portraits from museums in Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine; it was in portraits that the talent of Mirys is most fully revealed.

  XX + XXI. POLISH ART GALLERY - Sculpture

  The Vistula, Queen of Polish Rivers

  Near the borders of Poland in the province of Lesser Poland there stands a high and rocky crag of the Tatra mountains […] whence the river Vistula flows from its source and meanders through the centre of the Crown Kingdom of Poland northwards to the very city of Gdańsk, where its fresh waters into the salt water of the Baltic Sea flow and intermingle. Indeed, this one among all others in the Kingdom of Poland is known as the Head of All Rivers. These words about the Vistula and a woodcut showing a landscape with Barania Góra (Ram Mountain), where the sources of the Vistula are located, open an exhibition dedicated to this queen of Polish rivers and portrayals of it in historic books, maps, and plans. A characterisation of the Vistula and an engraving of it were included in a 1703 edition of Hieronim Morsztyn’s work “Antypasty Małżeńskie (Matrimonial Appetisers)”, a collection of three amorous tales first published in 1650.
