The exhibition of The films of Andrzej Wajda in movie posters around the world was one of a series presenting the most outstanding artists of Polish cinema and their work, organized by the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź.

The artistic work of Andrzej Wajda - one of the most recognized Polish film, theatre and television directors - was presented through the posters created to accompany his films around the world over the last 60 years. In 1954, Andrzej Wajda directed his first feature film, A Generation (Pokolenie).

For many years, the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź has been collecting museum exhibits connected with the director's life and artistic work. This collection of posters, associated with Andrzej Wajda's films issued both in Poland and abroad, is the largest in the world. Among them are true works of art, one-of-a-kind pieces, printed in limited editions in Japan, Argentina, Germany, and France, among others. They were created by outstanding artists. The collection of posters is constantly growing thanks to the release of new pieces to accompany showings of Wajda's films around the world.

This collection, which is evidence of the great popularity of the Polish director's films, was presented to the public for the first time.

At the exhibition you could admire pieces by Roman Cieślewicz, Wojciech Zamecznik, Wojciech Fangor, Franciszek Starowieyski, Wiktor Górka, Waldemar Świerzy, and Jan Lenica - representatives of the so-called Polish School of Poster Art - as well as by creators of multilingual versions of posters to accompany Wajda's films. There were also pieces by Wiesław Wałkuski, Jakub Erol, Cyprian Kościelniak, Andrzej Pągowski, Marek Freundenreich, Marcin Mroszczak, Rafał Olbiński, and Rosław Szaybo. At the exhibition you could also admire posters by distinguished foreign artists such as Peter Strausfeld, Alain Lynch, Dominique Guillotin, Otto Kummert, Milan Grygar, Pierre Collier, M. Ogosawara and Erhard Grutter.

The co-organiser of the exhibition in the main building was the National Museum in Kraków, in co-operation with the 54th Kraków Film Festival. The presentation in Kraków was co-financed by the Municipality of Kraków.

From 15 September to 5 October 2014 the exhibition will be held at the Museum of the City of Gdynia as part of the 39th Gdynia Film Festival, and from 15 October 2014 to 4 January 2015 at the Wilanów Poster Museum.
