Papal Splendour

14.06-18.09.2016 Papal Splendour

One week before the opening of the exhibition 'Maria: Mater Misericordiae', visitors to the EUROPEUM will be able to see a work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680), the greatest artist of European Baroque: a bronze portrait medallion of Pope Clement X (from a private collection).

The show, entitled 'Papal Splendour', will feature two other images of popes: a medal by Antonio Travani that also portrays Clement X, based on a sketch by Bernini (the medal comes from the collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw), and a bas-relief from the collection of the National Museum in Krakow, depicting Clement’s successor, Pope Innocent XII (a work most likely produced in the studio of another eminent Roman sculptor, Domenico Guidi).

The author of the principal work is an artist who can rightly be described as the 'father' of European Baroque - suffice it to say that he created the colonnade in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, the baldachin over the tomb of St. Peter and the famous sculptural group of The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. It should also be emphasized that this is the first ever exhibition of a work by Bernini in Poland. The juxtaposition of several papal likenesses will allow the presentation of the issue and significance of a varied display of the portrait as a visible sign of the presence of St. Peter’s successor, which is particularly important in the context of the visit of the Holy Father Francis to Krakow.
