The EUROPEUM exhibition space presents a new acquisition of the National Museum in Krakow – an impressive portrait of a woman, titled Portrait of a Lady (1682) and painted by Caspar Netscher, a prominent Dutch portraitist active in the Baroque era mainly in the Hague.

This subtly painted depiction is typical for the Dutch art of the second half of the 17th century with its penchant for impressive and sophisticated portraits of elegant ladies and gentlemen, usually presented against a background of curtains and a view of a park or garden, inspired by French and English painting (mainly through the works of Anton van Dyck).

Because of the stylistic convention applied by the artist and his typical “courtly” aesthetics, the portrait of a lady – perhaps of aristocratic background – is a classic example of Netscher's repertoire dominated by close-ups, usually carefully recreated with attention to detail regarding costume elements and models' attributes.

The painting was acquired thanks to funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage within “Collections - Priority 4 – Museum Collections” programme.
