New Technologies = New Competencies? Prospects for Staff Development in the Cultural Sector

New Technologies = New Competencies? Prospects for Staff Development in the Cultural Sector

The National Museum in Krakow is a partner in the Erasmus+ project Innovative Professional Skills for Advanced Museum Communication and Education (Musedu+). The project is conducting research on the "Museum+" model and related methodologies for educational and communication activities in cultural institutions.
The project involves cultural and scientific institutions from Italy, Spain, Germany, and Poland. The project's intended outcomes include the development of new, specialized professional roles and methods for working with digital technologies. Sharing the acquired knowledge will be facilitated by the MusEdu+ technology system – an online platform and training program for postgraduate studies in culture, as well as a publication presenting the accumulated knowledge. More information about the MusEdu+ project can be found here.

The conference "New Technologies = New Competencies? Prospects for the Development of Personnel in the Cultural Sector" at the National Museum in Krakow features a meeting with representatives of partner institutions and presentations by invited experts who use digital tools in culture.

Presentations in Polish and English, translation available.
Participation in the event is free, but reservations are required for the workshop.

Open Heritage: Collaboration of Cultural Institutions with Wikimedia Polska | Agata Stadnicka

The expert will provide a general overview of current models of collaboration between cultural institutions and Wikimedia Polska, emphasizing the concept, assumptions, and benefits of implementing joint projects. She will then present one possible form of collaboration, using the example of her work with the National Museum in Krakow. The presentation will also encourage institutions to take initiative and outline the practical aspects of the collaboration process with Wikimedia Polska.

Artificial Intelligence in Culture - How to Chart a Course in an Ocean of Opportunities and Controversies | David Sypniewski

This presentation will provide a comprehensive guide to the artificial intelligence ecosystem, understood not as a single technology but as a broad range of tools transforming the face of contemporary cultural institutions. The talk demystifies the concept of artificial intelligence and outlines specific implementation paths: from improving staff digital competencies, through the safe operation of local models, to designing proprietary services based on algorithms. A key element of the meeting will be an analysis of the ethical and social dimensions – we will examine narratives that build audience resistance and potential points of conflict. The goal is to equip participants with a map and compass that will allow them to consciously manage innovation in culture, balancing technological enthusiasm with social responsibility.
About the workshop

Cultural institutions are increasingly expected to deliver on digital platforms—educational platforms, open knowledge, external content distribution platforms, immersive interpretation, participatory projects, and narrative environments. The tools are available, but there's a lack of clarity about who within the organization should actually possess these competencies and how existing roles must expand, divide, or be redesigned to accommodate them.

This workshop session begins with a MUSEDU+ gap-fit analysis and quickly moves from diagnosis to design. Participants will map their institution against six models of digital innovation in museums, try one of them in a short hands-on exercise, and emerge with a sketch of the role profile their museum truly needs. This workshop is aimed at museum professionals working at the intersection of education, curation, communication, and digital operations—as well as anyone responsible for building teams capable of fulfilling a museum's digital mission.

You will take away from the workshop:

  • a clear picture of where your institution stands on six patterns of digital innovation
  • direct experience of one of the competency gaps—not just its description
  • a draft role profile that you can take with you to the organization
