Announcement of the results of the competition for the modernization of the Main Building
Public announcement of the results of the Competition for the development of an architectural concept for the reconstruction, expansion and/or superstructure of the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow.
The Competition Organiser – the National Museum in Krakow – acting in cooperation with the Krakow Branch of the Association of Polish Architects (SARP) held a Competition for the development of an architectural concept for the reconstruction, expansion and/or superstructure of the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow.
Subject matter and purpose of the Competition:
The subject matter of the competition involves developing an architectural concept for the reconstruction, expansion and/or superstructure of the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow.
The competition called for an architectural concept for the functional arrangement of the provided utility programme in a modern and attractively formed interior of the existing Museum building.
Due to the fact that the building, whose construction began in the 1930s, cannot currently be rationally used for the functions of a contemporary museum, it became necessary to reconstruct it in order to obtain a facility which will be comfortable in use, flexible in management, functional, and which will meet the requirements of a contemporary museum.
The purpose of the Competition is to obtain the finest, most valuable concept in terms of artistic and utilitarian aspects – in accordance with the evaluation criteria.
This open, one-stage Competition is of implementation/study nature (part of the Competition Entry will be implemented). The subject of the Competition was divided into two stages: Stage I refers to the historical part of the Main Building, built in the 1930s, and takes into account the construction of an entrance complex. Stage II involves the reconstruction of the remaining part of the building.
The Competition procedure:
150 requests to participate in the Competition were submitted within the deadline.
Upon the completion of the evaluation of applications and the accompanying documents, as well as requesting the Competition Participants to supplement or clarify their proposals, and their further re-evaluation, 128 Participants were invited to submit their entries.
The Organizer excluded 22 Participants from participation in the Competition due to their failure to comply with the requirements laid down in the regulations of the Competition.
22 competition entries were submitted within the deadline.

Grounds:
The first prize was awarded for the innovative, consistently pursued idea which resulted in a functional and flexible exhibition space and very attractive public spaces.
The value of the work lies in using environmentally friendly technologies as an element of the construction of the architectural form, which allows for making environmental considerations an integral part of the ideological message of the building.
The project provides an opportunity to create a unique museum interior, breaking with stereotypical images, while retaining the artistic values of the historic building.
The jury emphasized the value of the well-thought-out arrangement of the area around the Museum, especially its northern part.

Grounds:
The second prize was awarded to a simple yet captivating idea and the proposal of its implementation, consisting of inserting a cubical form into the existing building structure.
With great success and sensitivity in relation to the monumental building, the designer arranges the functional programme in a segment of the historical part of the building.
The entry contains a clear idea with a distinct division (the most prominent among all the submitted works) into an administrative (service) and exhibition areas. This improves the efficiency of operating and managing the building, in line with the recommendations for a "green museum".

Grounds:
By awarding the third prize, the Competition Jury acknowledged the decision to design the internal atrium, which largely determines the value of the presented concept. Creation of the central space, which integrates the different parts of the building and at the same time offers the visitor a good point of reference, refers to the best traditions of museum architecture.
The Competition Jury's doubts were raised by the way the multi-storey central hall was arranged – its monumental nature, resulting from the alternating rhythm of openings, stands in opposition to the clarity of the design of the Museum and its facade. A clear emphasis on the East-West axis in the functional-spatial layout, and the introduction of the second entrance add value to public spaces. The Competition Jury appreciated the decision to make a clear division into different functional parts, though the idea was not consistently pursued.
The Competition Jury decided to award two honorable mentions for the following competition entries:

Grounds:
The honorary mention was granted for a consistent and structured idea for the new layout of the exhibition space with optimal functional solutions. Another value acknowledged by the Jury lay in the restoration of the original shape of the hall with the introduction of daylight.
In connection with the above evaluation, the Competition Jury decided to award the following prizes:
- First Prize 55,000 PLN
- Second Prize 35,000 PLN
- Third Prize 20,000 PLN
as well as honorary mentions, each worth 10,000 pln
Approval of the Jury's decision:
The work of the Competition Jury was approved by the Director of the National Museum in Krakow, Zofia Gołubiew.
Post-competition exhibition:
The Competition Entries will be presented at an exhibition which will be held from 16 October to 22 November 2015 in the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow, Al. 3 Maja 1, 30-062 Krakow.
Post-competition discussion:
An open post-competition discussion accompanied by the presentation of competition entries will take place on 18 November 2015 in the Main Building of the National Museum in Krakow.
