MNK Czartoryski Museum - Collections

  • Only several objects from Prince Władysław Czartoryski's impressive collection of ancient goldsmithery have survived until today. The collection once included bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and pendants made by masters of Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. In August 1939, it was moved along with other most precious objects from the Czartoryski Museum to Sieniawa, the Czartoryski family estate, in order to hide it in case of war. Unfortunately, shortly after its outbreak, the collection was looted by the Wehrmacht soldiers. The surviving exhibits give us an opportunity to witness the significant artistic value of the collection and the exquisite skills of antique jewellers. The photographs also include examples of jewellery made from cheaper materials such as bronze, glass and Egyptian faience, as well as a rarity – a fragment of a marble sculpture depicting the head of Aphrodite with a preserved original earring.

All the exhibits are on display at the Gallery of Ancient Art of the National Museum in Krakow, in the Arsenal of the Princes Czartoryski Museum.
