Olga Boznańska - In the studio 1897

Title: In the Studio
Author: Olga Boznańska
Date: 1897
Type: Painting
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: unknown

The vertically oriented painting depicts a young girl standing against the wall in a studio. The light in the painting is subtle, falling from above, from the right-hand side. The color palette is dark and muted, dominated by black, brown, dusky green, and deep red. The scene is filled with heavy shadows, with many areas left in semi-darkness. Contours are blurred in places, giving the impression of looking at the scene through glass. The composition resembles a preliminary sketch, stripped of fine details.

The girl stands at the center of the composition, occupying about one-third of the canvas. She remains still, enveloped in shadow. Her hair is dark, topped with a bright red ornament—perhaps a ribbon or bow. Her face is rather dark, with an olive tone. The eyes are dark as well, looking toward the right. Her expression is calm, perhaps drowsy or bored. She wears a dark, almost black dress with long sleeves and a white collar. The outfit blends with her hair and legs, merging into one large dark shape. The edges of the clothing are indistinct, unified into a single shadowy mass. Her arms are bent behind her back, resting against the wall.

In the upper left corner appears a dark red patch—possibly a curtain or part of a painting. Below it, shadowy areas of green, black, and brown spread across the studio wall. The shadow extends into the center of the composition, merging with the girl’s contours. The wall itself is light beige, slightly soiled.

On the left side, two paintings lean against the wall. The first, a vertical rectangle, depicts a woman’s portrait against a plain background. The figure is shown to the shoulders, with dark hair pinned up, gazing to the left. The portrait lies in shadow, lacking detail. Resting against it is a narrow, vertical painting of a vase with a red flower, turned slightly to the right. It stands in front of the girl, partly obscuring the left side of her dress. This painting, also shadowed, is rendered loosely, with little precision. What stands out most is its wide golden frame. The narrow vertical strip of the left edge and the entirety of the right edge of the frame form the brightest area of the canvas.

The studio floor is dark brown. On the right, behind the girl, stands a large rectangular form resembling either the back of a canvas or a wooden board. It is dark brown with a greenish hue, nearly the same height as the girl.

The girl is not particularly highlighted; instead, she disappears into the half-darkness, blending into the background. She appears bored, yet mysterious—bringing a sense of unease, while at the same time sparking curiosity.
