The collections of the Jan Matejko House

Jan Matejko (1838-1893) was the creator of large-format paintings on historical themes and of highly valued portraits. Many of them can be admired in the Gallery of 19th- Century Polish Art in the Sukiennice.

  The Numismatic Room

  The Numismatic Room was established in 1883. The initially modest collection expanded mainly thanks to the generosity of private benefactors such as Henryk Bukowski. The 1903 donation of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski's collection resulted in a radical change in the rank of the Room, which became the repository of the most representative collection of Polish coins, medals and banknotes, featuring a number of unique objects (e.g. Bolesław Chrobry's GNEZDVN CIVITAS denarius or Władysław Łokietek's ducat).

Militaria in the NMK collections

The National Museum in Krakow is in the possession of the second largest collection of old weapons and uniforms in Poland. The most valuable exhibits, memorabilia of historical figures and works of decorative art are normally presented at the permanent exhibition "Arms and Uniforms in Poland". This exhibition, however, constitutes only a foretaste of the impressive museum collections.

  Maksymilian Gierymski: works, inspirations, reception.

  The National Museum in Krakow reminds the creative output of Maksymilian Gierymski (1846–1874), one of the most famous 19th-century Polish painters belonging to artists' colony in Munich. The 140th anniversary of the artist's death, which is celebrated this year, was the pretext for the exhibition. The artist, who died young, at the age of only 28, left creative output which inspired next generations of artists and was the beginning of the first Polish school of landscape painting.

  Andrzej Strumiłło

  As part of the ‘Living Gallery’ cycle, the National Museum in Cracow (MNK) presented an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and drawings by Andrzej Strumiłło. This versatile artist is a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, photographer, book illustrator, set designer, author of books about nature and culture, poet and traveller.

  The Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Collection

  The impressive collection accumulated by Emeryk Hutten-Czapski (1828–1896) consists mainly of unique numismatic objects: coins, bank notes and medals. This eminent scholar, collector and bibliophile also left an interesting collection of prints, militaria, textiles, badges, pottery, jewelry, gems, and glass as well as a vast library.

  Witold-K. Exhibition of the works donated by the family

  As part of the cycle „Collection +”, the National Museum in Krakow presented, in the Gallery of 20th Century Art, in the Main Hall, several dozen works of Witold-K. This is a gift to the Museum from the artist's family – Laurie Kaczanowska and Wit Thomas Kaczanowski. The exhibition was enriched with selected works from the artist's collection and the portrait of Witold-K made by Pablo Picasso.
