Malawski Trio was founded in 2011 by musicians and lecturers from the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków. Pianist Sławomir Cierpik and cellist Barbara Łypik-Sobaniec have collaborated since 1995, performing at prestigious festivals in Poland and abroad (Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Czech Republic). Their repertoire ranges from classical (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven), through Romantic (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bruch, Chopin, Tchaikovsky), to 20th-century and contemporary music (Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Bloch, Panufnik).
In 2011, the ensemble welcomed violinist Maciej Lulek, concertmaster of Sinfonietta Cracovia and an acclaimed chamber musician. He has performed across Europe, the Americas, Japan, Qatar, and Kuwait, including as a member of Piazzoforte Quintet, winner of a Fryderyk Award in 2006.
Polish music holds a special place in the trio's repertoire, featuring works by Chopin, Malawski, Dobrzyński, Różycki, Panufnik, Walaciński, Chyrzyński, and Kulenty. In 2018, they premiered November Sonata by Mateusz Bień, composed for the group. In 2021, they gave the world premiere of Washed Out by Jarek Płonka, dedicated to the ensemble.
