Agreement on the construction of the Centre for Conservation and Storage

National Museum in Krakow

17.07.2015
Friday
On 17 July 2015, The Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage Andrzej Wyrobiec, the Director of the National Museum in Krakow Zofia Gołubiew, and the Governor of Małopolska Jerzy Miller, in the presence of the Marshal of the Małopolska region Marek Sowa signed an agreement to erect the Centre for Conservation and Storage of Collections (CKM) in Krakow.
- The collections are the greatest treasure and the greatest concern for the museums. I hope that with the support of the Minister Andrzej Wyrobiec, the Governor Jerzy Miller and the goodwill of the Marshal's Office and many other institutions, we will be able to build the Centre for Conservation and Storage. And if we succeed, it will become a model for the whole Poland – said the NMK Director, Zofia Gołubiew, on Friday after signing the declaration of transfer of land for this investment.

The agreement paves the way for the creation of the first Polish inter-museum “green” Center for Conservation and Storage of Collections. The innovative form of cooperation of the Małopolska museum circles enabled a creation of a common space for the thirteen partners participating in the project. In addition to the NMK – the originator and leader of the project, they include the Wawel Royal Castle, Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow – MOCAK.

The creation of the centre will provide a lasting protection of the exhibits, with easy and broad access to the extensive collections of Krakow museums, which will significantly contribute to the development of multidisciplinary scientific activities and research in the field of cultural heritage. As a “green museum”, the new building is designed to ensure safe storage conditions, with minimal energy consumption and significant reduction of operating costs.

The envisaged location of the project is the site of the former steelworks in Nowa Huta, within the framework of the comprehensive programme of revitalization of the area under the name “KRK NH2”. The Centre for Conservation and Storage of Collections will be constructed in three years. This year will see the development of its functional and utility plan, while next year will see the announcement of the architectural design competition.
