Case with personal effects of Olga Boznańska circa 1897 – 1940
Title: Casket with Olga Boznańska’s Personal Belongings
Author: Unknown
Date: between 1897 and 1940
Technique: Joinery, carving (casket)
Material: Wood (casket)
Dimensions: height: 8.0 cm, width: 33.5 cm, depth: 11.5 cm (casket)
The light wooden casket has the form of a rectangular box. Its upper, wider side is decorated with carved motifs spanning the entire width. The grooves are filled with black pigment. The same motif is repeated three times in evenly spaced intervals. The design depicts a simplified bird perched on a tree, shown in left profile, its beak facing the viewer. The tree is adorned with long, rounded leaves and large circular fruits, each patterned with crisscrossing lines.
Along the upper edges of the side walls runs another carved band: a narrow vertical strip with a regular, geometric motif. It consists of four chisel cuts shaped like rounded triangles—two above, two below—symmetrically angled toward one another. In the center of the same wall is a small round hole pierced into the wood.
On the reverse side, two metal hinges allow the casket to be opened. The interior is plain and empty, with walls of light brown wood.
Spread around the casket are its contents: three pairs of eyeglasses, including two tinted sunglasses; a miniature metal mouse figurine; a stamp; interchangeable nibs for a pen; a silver key; and a medallion pendant. Also present are a black multifunctional penknife, a deck of playing cards, a pencil, a broken wooden brush handle, and a small golden *mascaron*—a stylized sculpted human face. Two small boxes accompany these items: one wooden, the other leather, in brown and gold. Completing the set is a dark spectacle case decorated with delicate gold ornamentation, likely intended for eyeglasses.
