  Medal in private. Private Medals in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

  From their very beginnings, medals have been close to the hearts of those who receive them – quite literally! They were often meant to be held in the hand, and to be passed from hand to hand (either in official ceremonies or during private events), or sent by post, or even … tossed out into gathered crowds. They were used in a variety of ways also. They were sometimes piously stored in small cases, or ostentatiously worn on the chest, everyday items were decorated with them, or they were interred in graves along with the deceased. They accompanied people during family celebrations such as baptisms, weddings and funerals, but also lent a celebratory touch to official ceremonies. Their purpose was to commemorate events and individuals, thus they were mementos of a personal nature in every sense.

Pairing Antagonists: Pisanello’s Medals of Niccolò Piccinino and Francesco Sforza

Abstract: Among the early medals made by Pisanello (Antonio Pisano, c. 1395–c. 1455), considered as the “inventor of the modern medal”, there are two of mercenary captains, Niccolò Piccinino and Francesco Sforza (the future duke of Milan). At the alleged moment of the medals’ execution both condottieri were in the service of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan, who appears to have been the most probable commissioner. The pairing of these two captains was not coincidental – they were successors to the leaders of the two greatest Italian military companies, the bracceschi (led by Braccio da Montone) and the sforzeschi (of Muzio Attendolo Sforza), whose juxtaposition soon became a topos among contemporary chroniclers and biographers. The article outlines the political background of the commission and discusses the content and iconography of the two medals.

On Probability and Proof: Piecing Together the Puzzle of Alexander’s Elephant Medallions

Abstract: The elephant medallions associated with the reign of Alexander the Great continue to cause controversy. A recent attempt to remove the elephant/chariot type from this corpus is based upon the die axes of three known specimens. This conclusion is false on both methodological grounds and the existence of a fourth specimen. The elephant/chariot type should not be excluded from the corpus of these medallions.

  Woodcut portrait of Mikołaj Rej from the Krakow edition of Zwierzyniec (Bestiary) of 1574, and the lithograph bust of Adam Mickiewicz from the Warsaw edition of Poetry of 1833 – these and other portraits of wordsmiths are shown at the exhibition devoted to the images of authors and their works.

  Józef Mehoffer - St. Sebastian and St. Maurice

  On 10 April 2019, the collection of the National Museum in Krakow gained Józef Mehoffer’s another design for the stained glass windows in the Fribourg Cathedral: The St. Sebastian and St. Maurice cartoon, which together with the St. Catherine and St. Barbara cartoon bought last year, form the design of the stained glass window The Martyrs — world-class masterpiece of monumental art, awarded the gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1900.

The one at the National Museum in Krakow differs from them with a strict relationship with the historical thought of Józef Piłsudski – creator of Polish Legions, architect of independence, but also the strategist, publicist and inquiring analyst of Polish history.

  Old Prints on Medal-Making

  On 6 September, the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum opened a display presenting the most beautiful and interesting old prints from the NMK collection on the theme of medal-making. The exhibition from the series 'De Re Nummaria' features objects such as albums with meticulous drawings presenting the achievements of ancient medallists, as well as academic studies analyzing the information they contain.
