  Precious, most precious. Works from the Princes Czartoryski Library

  The impressive collection of the Princes Czartoryski Library is part of Polish national and European heritage. Started by Adam Kazimierz and Izabela Czartoryski in the 18th century and expanded by subsequent generations, it includes manuscripts and printed works from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the greatest treasures of literature, science and culture.

  Gothic in the Carpathians

  The exhibition ‘Gothic in the Carpathians’ is the first attempt to present the art of the late Middle Ages in all countries of the region. Through a collection of about one hundred paintings and sculptures brought from nine countries, supplemented by photographic documentation of non-transportable items (wall paintings, architectural sculptures) created especially for the exhibition, we show the Carpathians as an artistic area with continuous development, where one work of art gave rise to another. The same workshops operated on both sides of the mountains, paintings and sculptures were sent in both directions, and artistic trends intermingled here.

  Hokusai

  Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is one of the most important creators of Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period (1603–1868). His works depict a world captured in motion and constant change, characteristic of the aesthetics of ukiyo-e (literally “pictures of the floating world”).

  YOUNG POLAND GROUP OF FIVE. THE FORGOTTEN REBELS

  The Group of Five exhibition is the first show in the history of museology dedicated to the activity of this Young Poland group, which existed for less than two and a half years (from August 1905 to February 1908). It also marks the first joint display of its members’ works since their activities at the beginning of the 20th century. This formation, almost entirely forgotten today, consisted of: Leopold Gottlieb, Witold Wojtkiewicz, Wlastimil Hofman, Mieczysław Jakimowicz, and Jan Rembowski.

  Women of Lviv

  In the introduction to his groundbreaking work Radical Eye, Professor Andrzej Turowski identifies World War I as a key formative event in the history of modernism—an event that also “revealed separate areas of male and female experience”. This notion resonates with the exhibition Lviv Women, which, however, broadens the perspective beyond that of “crisis and destruction”, extending it to include the traumatic events associated with World War II—both those that preceded and followed it. These events were particularly dramatic and painful within the local context of Lviv, as well as in the lives of each of the Lviv-based women artists whose works are featured in the exhibition. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ongoing since 2022, perpetuates, prolongs, and reactivates traumatic experiences that once seemed consigned to the past under the banner of “never again”.

  Chełmoński

  The Krakow exhibition culminates the monumental series of three monographic exhibitions dedicated to Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914). Two previous editions took place at the National Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Poznań. The exhibition includes a wide selection of oil paintings, watercolours and drawing works from many private collections as well as from museum collections - domestic and foreign ones. The extraordinary talent of the creator of Gossamer (pl. Babie lato) and the sensual beauty of his works have earned him the status of a national artist and one of the most outstanding representatives of Polish realism.

  Young Poland. Polish Art 1890-1918

  The exhibition “Young Poland”, dedicated to Poland and the development of Polish art in its “golden period“, that is between 1890 and 1918, will be held in Japan in 2025. It will tell a story about Polish history, the prologue to which will be outlined by works by Jan Matejko and Artur Grottger, as well as about Polish art, which at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was not only part of the process of constructing national identity, but also ensured Poland’s presence and successes in the art salons of Europe despite the fact that Poland did not exist on maps of the time.

  Transformations. Modernity in the Third Polish Republic

  The exhibition “Transformations. Modernity in the Third Polish Republic” is the last in the “4 x Modernity” series which has been organised at the National Museum in Krakow since 2021. As part of the exhibition, a wide variety of interpretations of modernity are shown in the fields of Polish art, architecture and design, beginning from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and continuing up to the present day. This fourth exhibition will illustrate the phenomenon of the revision of the concept of modernity and its titular transformation, which were contemporaneous with the social, cultural, and political transformations which took place after 1989. A consequence of these transformations was a multiplicity of creative attitudes and a reinterpretation of the code of modernity, which no longer presented a unified and cohesive image yet which brought about a dynamic and diverse polyphony of voices, characteristic of the cultural life of the Third Republic.

  EXHIBITION – VIGNETTES, SIGNETS, AND CARTOUCHES – THE BEAUTY OF ANCIENT BOOKS AND MAPS

  The beauty of books is determined by the fonts used, their form, and the initials, which comprise a fundamental aspect of the layout of the text, often enriched with illustrations. The graphic design of both books and maps is enhanced by the addition of many decorative elements such as vignettes, tailpieces, cartouches, decorative borders, dashes and so on, which give a compact block of text or title a feeling of elegance and lightness. The style of these decorations allows for the identification of the period in which a given book or map was created.
