Tymon Niesiołowski, Portrait of a Girl in a Pink Dress, c. 1907–1910, oil on canvas

Title: Portrait of a Girl in a Pink Dress
Artist: Tymon Niesiołowski
Date: c. 1907–1910
Type: painting
Technique: oil on canvas
This vertical painting depicts a young girl holding a jug, standing indoors. The light falls from above, on the left-hand side. The palette is dominated by shades of pink, brown, and blue, with some small black accents.

The girl is placed in the centre of the composition and occupies nearly the entire height of the canvas. She is turned three-quarters to the left, with her face directed toward the viewer. Her dark hair is pinned back on both sides, and pink ribbons are fastened to the right side of her head. Her face is slender and flushed. She has dark eyebrows and large, focused eyes that look toward the viewer. Her nose is small, and her lips are slightly rosy.

She wears a knee-length dress with long sleeves and a white collar. The edges of the collar are decorated with a wavy blue line, and red flowers are embroidered in each corner. The sleeve edges are black. Her hands are joined below her abdomen, holding an orange clay jug, with its round opening facing the viewer. She wears dark tights and black ankle boots.

The girl stands on a light wooden floor near a wall. On the left-hand side of the wall, a blue cloth is hanging.

In the lower left corner of the canvas is the artist’s signature, painted in black. It consists of a single letter “N”, slanted to the right.
