Olga Boznańska - From a Walk 1889

Title: From a Walk
Author: Olga Boznańska
Date: 1889
Type: Painting
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: height: 161.5 cm, width: 100 cm; with frame: height: 184.5 cm, width: 121 cm, depth: 5 cm

The vertically oriented painting depicts a young woman seated, wearing a white dress and holding a parasol and flowers in her hands.

She is shown in semi-profile, turned slightly to the right, her face directed toward the viewer. The woman sits upright, her right leg crossed over the other. Her posture is dignified yet delicate. The figure emerges from a cool, bluish-gray background, stripped of unnecessary detail, with no objects to distract from her presence.

Her hair is light brown, smoothly combed back and tied into a low bun, with her left ear visible. Her face is oval, with a high forehead and a sharply defined chin. Her complexion is fair and smooth, almost porcelain-like, with a subtle blush on her cheeks. Her eyebrows are short and straight, gently arched. The eyes are light brown, directed slightly left and downward. Her lids are somewhat lowered, lending her gaze a softness and melancholy. Her nose is small with a rounded tip, while her lips are pale pink and slightly parted.

The model wears a long white gown with long sleeves. The fabric is smooth, semi-transparent at the upper neckline and sleeves. The dress has a high, closed collar with an attached jabot of gathered material cascading down the front. The bodice is plain, cinched at the back with a bow.

Her hands rest on her lap, holding a closed black parasol placed horizontally—a striking contrast against the pale dress and background. She grips the handle in her left hand and the tip in her right. Both hands are relaxed, lowered naturally onto the dress. Scattered across the parasol are small white daisies, their petals loosely arranged, standing out against the dark fabric.

Beneath the dress, part of her dark shoes is visible. The background is uniform, in a cool shade of blue. The floor is brown, with a burgundy skirting board running along the wall. The entire composition is painted in a restrained palette of white, blue, and gray, with only the brown of the floor and the deep red border adding touches of warmth.
