Olga Boznańska - Interior 1906

Olga Boznańska - Interior 1906

Title: Interior
Author: Olga Boznańska
Date: 1906
Type: Painting
Medium: Oil on cardboard
Dimensions: height: 50.5 cm, width: 73 cm; with frame: height: 63.5 cm, width: 85 cm, depth: 3 cm

The horizontally oriented painting depicts the interior of Olga Boznańska’s Kraków studio. The composition is shown from a slight angle, allowing both walls to be seen at once. This creates a sense of depth: in the foreground we see vases and a table, in the middle ground a window, and in the background the outline of a garden.

The scene presents a corner of the room, with a window on the left and a large mirror on the right. The composition is static, yet vibrant with light and color, built from patches of varying intensity. On the left, a wide-open window lets in soft daylight, as well as lush, fresh greenery, flickering as if alive thanks to short, quick brushstrokes. The window has vertical panes, and to the right of it a sheer, light curtain drifts lazily into the room. On the windowsill inside stand three plants in brown pots, with long stems and dark red blossoms, painted with loose strokes that blend into the greenery outside, merging with its depth.

At the center of the composition is a dark wooden desk or dressing table. Its polished surface reflects the window light in shimmering, blurred patches. On it, closer to the middle, stands a white ceramic vase filled with a lush bouquet of flowers—red, pink, and white with large, soft petals, some leaning outward. To the left sits another white vase with flowers, placed on a raised shelf forming part of the desk. These blossoms are mostly red, interspersed with blue color patches.

On the desk rests a large rectangular mirror in a golden frame, leaning against the right-hand wall. The frame is decorated with raised ornaments in its upper corners. The mirror does not provide a sharp reflection; instead, it suggests the presence of the interior, transforming light and color. It does not build a sense of realism but conveys a tranquil atmosphere. On the right edge of the desk, at the painting’s margin, is a tall, slender, translucent greenish glass vase holding long, delicate red and white flowers, resembling plumes or flames. They appear soft and fragile. Behind them, the background is dark, nearly black, as though covered by a heavy curtain.

In the upper right corner is the artist’s signature, written in black paint: Olga Boznańska. 1906.

The room radiates calm. There is nothing to disturb its mood. This is an interior that reflects a state of mind rather than a physical space. It stirs emotions not by imposing them, but by leaving room for one’s own melancholy, one’s own silence.
