Title: Portrait of Zygmunt Pusłowski
Author: Olga Boznańska
Date: 1912 or 1913
Type: Drawing
Medium: Graphite on paper
Dimensions: Unknown

This vertical, rectangular drawing portrays Zygmunt Pusłowski, shown frontally and depicted only from the head upward. Executed on slightly yellowed sketchbook paper, the portrait employs hatching to build volume and shadow: closely drawn parallel lines mark darker areas, while lighter spaces emerge from more widely spaced strokes. Horizontal hatching is used in the background and to outline the sitter’s clothing.

The contours of the face are only lightly suggested. Rather than a precise anatomical study, the drawing conveys the sitter’s presence and character. Light falls from above, left, illuminating the high bare forehead. Hair remains only at the sides of the head. The face is lean, with pronounced cheekbones, furrowed brows, and a long, narrow nose. The eyes are faintly indicated, partly obscured beneath round spectacles. A full mustache, curled at the ends, crowns a long beard extending to the collarbones. A darker hint of a collar and bow tie suggests formal attire, likely a suit or frock coat.

The portrait radiates calm dignity and solemnity. Beyond likeness, it reflects Boznańska’s respect for the Pusłowski family, who held significance for her both socially and intellectually.
