Olga Boznańska - Golden Roses 1900
Olga Boznańska - Golden Roses 1900
Title: Golden Roses
Author: Olga Boznańska
Date: 1896
Type: Painting
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: height: 48 cm, width: 35.8 cm; with frame: height: 55.5 cm, width: 43 cm, depth: 5 cm
The vertically oriented painting depicts a bouquet of three yellow roses. The palette is light, with illumination coming from above, from the left. The background is gray, with faint rectangular brownish shapes that may suggest frames.
The flowers are placed at the center of the composition. They are large and bright, almost luminous. The first rose is positioned at the top, drooping slightly downward. The second sits directly below it, at the very center, facing forward. The third leans gently to the left, closer to the painting’s edge. The petals are open and irregular in arrangement. The roses are rendered as broad, light patches of yellow, with only subtle shadowing, so that the edges of the petals are barely visible. Here and there, touches of pink and blue appear among the petals. Their texture is dense, created with thick, visible brushstrokes. Surrounding the flowers are abundant dark green leaves, enriched with hints of blue and yellow. In some places, blue streaks accentuate the leaf shapes. Their edges are indistinct, blurred, at times merging with the background.
The bouquet seems to be placed in a transparent vase, though its contours are not clearly defined. Its translucency suggests it is glass.
No distinct objects appear in the background. In the lower right corner, along the edge of the canvas, is the artist’s signature: “Boznańska.” The inscription is slanted, descending from right to left. The letters are black and written in cursive.
The work has the feel of a preliminary sketch or a quick study of still life. The brushwork is loose and soft, creating a hazy effect. The mood is calm and undisturbed, leaving space for quiet reflection and melancholy.
