The sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, holding the Christ Child on her left knee. It is carved from wood. The faces and hands of both figures are light and flesh-toned. The cheeks and the tip of the chin of both the Virgin and the Child are tinged with pink. All remaining elements are dark gold. In places, a reddish-brown underlayer shows through the gilding, while on the throne a black underlayer is visible. The back and rear part of the throne are carved in a flat, attached plank. The entire sculpture is polychromed.
The Virgin Mary sits upright, leaning slightly forward. Her figure has a large head, an elongated torso, and shortened legs. She wears a veil, and on top of it a tall, chipped crown with a smooth band. Wavy strands of hair emerge from beneath the veil, framing her oval face. Mary’s forehead is smooth; her eyes are large and set close together; her nose is straight and prominent; her chin is round and well defined. Her lips form a slight smile. Her right arm is bent at the elbow, with the back of her hand facing outward toward the viewer. Her left arm is slightly bent downward so that she can support the Child’s left hand with her own.
Mary is dressed in a gown with long, narrow sleeves. At the neckline the dress is finished with a wide facing, a strip of fabric used to edge clothing. Above the facing is a collar fastened with a large ring-shaped clasp. Over the collar lies a piece of openwork lace that covers part of Mary’s neck. The gown is decorated with a pattern of golden squares. From each corner of the square a line runs toward its center, forming an X-shaped ornament. Between each pair of lines there is a small dot. The pattern does not appear everywhere because the sculpture’s polychromy is damaged. The gown falls straight to the ground, spreading out in a fan-like arrangement. The tips of Mary’s shoes peek out from between the folds. Her shoulders are covered by a cloak that, on the left side, covers her breast and arm. On the right side it emerges from beneath the elbow and flows forward, descending from her knees to her ankles.
The Child is not depicted as an infant but rather resembles a small-bodied adult. He too wears a crown with a smooth band, though it is slightly lower than Mary’s. His hair is evenly cut and reaches to his jawline. The Child is dressed in a long robe. His right arm is bent at a right angle, the hand raised in a gesture of blessing. His left arm is also bent, holding a closed book.
The throne is shaped like a rectangular block, with its sides extending beyond the base. On the front, along the lower edge, appears the word MARIA, written in uppercase letters.
