Ethereal beauty

Fans played a significant role in Chinese culture. Used since antiquity by both men and women, they were available in many varieties based on the function they fulfilled, their shape and the nature of their decoration. Apart from their functional qualities, fans constituted important ceremonial accessories. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907), they also became a medium for painters and calligraphers. The oldest type was a rigid fan.
