On a Motivation Clause of IOSPE I2 25 + 31
Abstract: The paper proposes a new reading of the last motivation clause of IOSPE I2 25 + 31, that concerns the minting of bronze coins. It refutes the restoration proposed by Vinogradov and Karyshkovskiy involving silver and gold, and on the basis of evidence from other epigraphic documents mentioning the appointment of citizens responsible for the minting of coins explains the clause in the following way: the text simply says that a prominent citizen was appointed for the minting of bronze coins and did his job well. The bronze coinage mentioned might be the so-called “Borysthenoi”, i.e. bronze coins with the head of the river-god Borysthenes (or Hypanis) on the obverse and Scythian arms, quiver (gorytos) and axe (sagaris) on the reverse.
Key words: Olbia, minting, bronze coinage, Kallinikos son of Euxenos, “Borysthenes”
