From 28 to 30 May 2026, an international academic conference entitled “Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski – statesman, exile, patron” took place at the MNK Sukiennice, a branch of the National Museum in Kraków. The event was organised by the National Museum in Kraków in collaboration with the Vilnius University Library.
The event formed part of the project ‘The MNK Czartoryski Museum Library – extension and refurbishment of the branch of the National Museum in Kraków’, currently being implemented by the National Museum in Kraków.
The project is co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the programme European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and the Environment 2021–2027, Priority VII ‘Culture’, Measure ‘Development of cultural infrastructure (listed and non-listed)’.
The conference brought together eminent historians, art historians and researchers from Poland and abroad, whose academic interests centre on the life and political, social and cultural activities of Prince Adam Jerzy MNK Czartoryski Museum. Among the participants were speakers representing academic institutions from Poland, as well as Germany, France, Lithuania, Slovakia and Bulgaria. During the two-day proceedings, 28 papers were presented, showcasing the latest research findings on one of the most important figures in 19th-century Polish political and intellectual life.
The conference attracted considerable interest from the academic community and the general public – on the first day of the proceedings, nearly 100 people attended, whilst on the second day around 70 people took part, both in person and via the online broadcast.
The presentations covered topics related to the prince’s diplomatic and political activities, his role within the Great Emigration community, and his patronage of culture, science and the arts. The conference provided a forum for the exchange of research findings, the presentation of new sources, and discussion of current research trends concerning Adam Jerzy Czartoryski and the legacy of the MNK Czartoryski Museum.
The event also served as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between academic institutions from various countries and to highlight the significance of the collections of the MNK Czartoryski Museum as a vital resource for research into the history of 19th-century Poland and Europe
Accompanying events, organised on the third day of the conference, included a guided tour of the MNK Czartoryski Museum and independent visits to the exhibitions on display in the MNK Main Building of the National Museum in Kraków.
