Piotr Michałowski

Somosierra

Description

An important work by Piotr Michałowski, a representative of Romanticism—Somosierra, also known as Charge in the Somosierra Pass—depicts the successes of Poles in the Napoleonic campaigns. This large-format oil on canvas (106 × 71 cm) is an expressive composition dominated by a dark palette of reds and browns. The outlines of soldiers and horses dissolve into clouds of dust and smoke rising above the Somosierra Pass. Today, the painting can be admired in the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art, in the Michałowski Room.
