The painting Kościuszko at Racławice is Matejko’s commentary on the historical events that took place at Racławice in 1794 and the history of Poland. The work commemorates the 1794 battle between Tadeusz Kościuszko and Russian forces. Kościuszko at Racławice is a monumental oil painting (465 × 897 cm), created in Matejko’s characteristic Academic style. The work conveys a message of social equality. In 1888, it was purchased through contributions from Poles living under the three partitions and donated to the National Museum in Kraków. Peasants, including those from villages near Kraków, posed for the painting. Today, it can be admired in the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in the Sukiennice.
