Castellan’s Daughter

Description

Stanisława Serafińska was the niece of Teodora Matejko, daughter of Joanna (née Giebułtowska) and Leon Serafiński. The Wiśnicz Castle depicted in the background is intended to emphasise the sitter’s connection with Wiśnicz, where the Serafiński family had their summer residence.

The painting was created in Jan Matejko’s home studio, as recalled in the memoirs of Stanisława Serafińska herself, who is portrayed in the painting. The completion of the work  is associated with a story of Teodora Matejko’s jealousy over her husband, which allegedly led her to sever relations with her sister’s family.
