A Miscast Denarius from the Hungarian Barbaricum

Abstract: Törtel, Nyilas-dűlő at first appears to be a typical ancient settlement site of the Hungarian Barbaricum. However, this is the first instance in which a miscast denarius has been identified in the region. Even more remarkably, its metal composition closely matches that of official Roman issues. Additional numismatic finds could indicate a local coin production in the area, including several cast denarii and imitations of antoniniani. These exhibit die-linked parallels, particularly with material from the nearby site of Tószeg, Sapi-halom. This connection is further reinforced by local pendants, which show close similarities to the star-and-crescent type imitations widely distributed in the Hungarian Barbaricum.
