The Paper Money Collection of the Numismatic Cabinet of the National Museum in Krakow between 1919–1949

Abstract: The collection of the Numismatic Cabinet of the National Museum in Krakow (NMK) contains ca. 21,000 paper money objects that performed or could have performed payment, credit or exchange functions. These include banknotes, vouchers, coupons, tickets, bills of exchange, stocks and bonds. The article focuses on the donors and individual groups of objects donated to the Numismatic Cabinet of the NMK between 1919 and 1949. The period under analysis is marked, on the one hand, by events related to the end of World War I and the establishment of the National Museum in Warsaw, and on the other hand, by the end of the long tenure of Feliks Kopera as director of the NMK and the transfer of the museum’s management from the municipality of Krakow to the Ministry of Culture and Art. For this period, we have access to the purchase catalogues and the now incomplete inventory of the museum’s long-time director, Feliks Kopera. Unfortunately, due to the lack of detailed information, such as the name of the issuer or the series number, we are not always able to identify the object in today’s collection. This text is the next article devoted to the collection of paper money at the NMK.
