The Vows of John Casimir

An oil sketch for the painting completed four years later (1893). At the centre of the composition, the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, John Casimir (Jan Kazimierz), kneels before an image of the Virgin Mary, vowing to extend civil rights to the nobility and improve the conditions of the peasantry. In front of the king stands Bishop Tarnowski reading the oath. The queen kneels beside him, with the royal retinue behind. The painting is rendered in warm tones of browns and ochres. Matejko painted it with loose, sketch-like brushstrokes.
