Four-in-Hand is Józef Chełmoński’s most famous painting and one of the greatest achievements of the Naturalist movement in Polish art. This large-scale oil painting (275x600cm), depicts a team of four horses driven by a Ukrainian peasant. It dates from the artist’s Paris period (1875–1887), when he created works inspired by Polish and Ukrainian landscapes.
