The painting Greeting to an Insurgent is part of a diptych depicting the parting of an insurgent and his beloved after the defeat of the January Uprising. The work combines an Academic form with Romantic content. This oil painting on panel appealed to all social classes through its insurgent iconography. The artist presents the man as a patriot ready to sacrifice his life for his homeland, and the woman as a faithful beloved. The landscape in the background is equally important, reinforcing the nostalgic tone of the work.
