Metal and Weapons Conservation Studio

The Metal and Weapons Conservation Workshop is one of the oldest conservation workshops at the National Museum in Kraków – it has been in existence since 1906. It carries out comprehensive restoration of metal artefacts, including their reconstruction. The workshop specialises in the conservation of objects made from mixed materials, such as military artefacts and decorative art.

In their work, the conservators combine traditional manufacturing techniques with the latest technology, which is made possible by the equipment that has been steadily added to over the years.

Among the most valuable objects conserved at the Workshop are:

• the karacena of Hetman Stefan Jabłonowski
• a reliquary cross, a gift from Władysław Jagiełło, from Sandomierz Cathedral
• the treasure from Środa Śląska
• a portable Augsburg altar, donated to Jasna Góra in 1708 by Prince Konstanty Sobieski
• the sword of Sigismund the Old from Wawel Cathedral
• a silver altar from the Sigismund Chapel in Wawel Cathedral

As part of ongoing requirements, conservation work is being carried out on artefacts from the Military Department and the Department of Artistic Crafts of the National Museum in Kraków.
