Rynek Główny 3, 31-042 Kraków
One of the most outstanding works of Polish Symbolism, this painting caused controversy not only in artistic circles but also among the public. It depicts a nude, golden-haired woman on a restless black horse. The woman clings to the horse’s back, embracing its neck. The enraged animal appears to be rearing. Its eyes are wide open, and foam lathers at its mouth. The tail and mane blend into the background and the woman’s long hair. The figures are identified with the ecstasy of sensory intoxication, bordering on the destructive power of madness.
