al. 3 Maja 1, 30-062 Kraków
The painting emanates an aura of pensiveness and mystery while simultaneously sparking interpretive controversy. It is one of Boznańska’s most recognizable works. Created in 1894 in Munich, this Symbolist oil painting was rendered in a restrained colour palette. When exhibited in 1896 at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin (Internationale Kunstausstellung) and in Vienna, it was noticed by William Ritter. Writing for Gazette des Beaux-Arts, he noted the painting’s mysterious atmosphere, drawing parallels to the poems of Maurice Maeterlinck, whom Boznańska admired.
