International Scientific Conference. Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski – statesman, emigrant, patron
National Museum in Kraków, 28-30 May 2026
Dear Sir or Madam,
On 28-30 May 2026, the National Museum in Kraków is organising the International Scientific Conference entitled Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski: statesman, emigrant, patron.
For some, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski is an eminent statesman, for others a patron of culture, others see him as an advocate of the Polish cause in exile, while his diplomatic services in the inter-war period are also raised. Apart from great politics, we should also remember Czartoryski's role in the everyday life of the emigrants, the help he gave them in their struggle for a decent life, to preserve their consciousness, to protect from hunger and disease, struggling for humane existence, trying to find a new place for themselves in society. Many emigrants wishing to be educated turned to the Prince for help. Several thousand letters, briefs and copies of replies, minute letters sent to the French authorities, official and “semi-official” letters are an excellent trace of this activity. There are letters asking for material assistance, support with one's own efforts with the French authorities, requests for patronage. The prince used his connections to make sure that emigrants seeking support from him could be assured that he cared about improving their difficult situation. The multifaceted nature of Czartoryski's achievements, his role in politics, his educational, charitable and literary activities, and his care for the national heritage should prompt us to present again this figure of great merit to Poland.
Although a great deal has already been written about the Prince and his activities, we hope that it is worth reconsidering his life and work. The conference will provide a platform for discussion and reflection on the life and activities of Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski in the context of the latest scientific research.
We invite you to apply and at the same time ask you to send the titles of your speeches together with an abstract in Polish or English (up to 3500 characters including spaces) by 30 September 2025 to the following address: czartoryski2026@mnk.pl
