  Matejko. The painter and history

  Among Polish painters, there is perhaps none more universally known than Jan Matejko. His works have accompanied generation after generation of Poles, at the very least from the beginnings of their education in the field of history, though mainly through reproductions in history books at that time. It is no exaggeration to say that the paintings of Matejko have shaped the imagination of the Polish nation on the greatest events of its own history. The painting “The Battle of Grunwald” (The painting is located in the National Museum in Warsaw)by this artist is the Polish painting most forcefully etched into the shared consciousness.

  Adam Marczyński. Lyricism and Form

  The presentation of more than 60 works from the collections of the National Museum in Krakow and the Museum of Art in Łódź aims to highlight the moment at which the artistic credo of Adam Marczyński was taking form, where the caesura is the 1940s to the mid-1960s. The exhibition examines the post-war output of the artist, who in his later years became interested in geometric abstraction. It is an excellent opportunity to juxtapose the artist’s painted works with the subtle, even poetic drawings and outstanding monotypes. The story ends with works associated with the geometric abstraction movement. Marczyński’s art.

  Glitter of gold. From the Collection of the Numismatic Cabinet

  The Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum is a very special place. It is first and foremost a kind of national treasury, where the most precious collection of Polish coins and medals is stored. Additionally, it is perhaps the only collection of this type which survived the Second World War virtually without losses despite comprising mainly objects made of gold, which were frequently the first victims of wartime looting and pillage by occupying forces and individuals exploiting the chaos and disruptions of that time.

  Princes Czartoryski Museum. Monastery

  The Origins. Ancient art gallery

  The aim of the permanent exhibition of ancient art from the collections of the National Museum in Kraków, located on the 1st floor in the Arsenal of the Princes Czartoryski Museum, is to show a full picture of the art of ancient cultures. The core of the exhibition is a collection acquired by Prince Władysław Czartoryski in the second half of the 19th century.

  The Princes Czartoryski Museum - Palace

  The permanent exhibition at the Palace of the Princes Czartoryski Museum displays the most valuable art collection in Poland, and one of the most valuable ones in Europe. The exhibition not only includes masterpieces of world painting such as Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine or Rembrandt van Rijn's Landscape with the Good Samaritan, but also works of painting, sculpture, crafts, military or applied arts. It is also an immense collection of souvenirs presenting Poland's history.

  Gallery of Decorative Art

  The Gallery of Decorative Art at the National Museum in Krakow is the largest permanent exhibition of this type in Poland. The displayed objects are arranged in a chronological order from the Early Middle Ages to the Art Nouveau period. The exhibition, with its stylishly arranged interiors and its collection of gold, fabrics, clothing, furniture, ceramics and glassware, complete with a unique collection of musical instruments and judaica, features nearly 4,000 exhibits presented in nine exhibition rooms and two annexes.

  Beginnings of print in the Polish lands. The first printers and their books

  The beginnings of print in the Polish lands date back to the mid-15^th  century and are associated with the arrival of itinerant German printers who had reach the land situated along the Vistula river in their search for work. The main centre of their activity was Kraków and the first well-known printer to operate there was Kaspar Straube.

  Czapski acquisitions. Norwid in diaries

  The collection of artistic works by Józef Czapski at the National Museum in Krakow currently amounts to 27 oil paintings, 3 etchings, and 15 drawings (loose, not collated in folios). In the years 2019–2022, the NMK received as gifts or otherwise acquired 4 oil paintings, an ink drawing, and Czapski’s table from the collection of Renata and Marek Szypulski and the Polish Humanitarian Fund in France, as well as etchings from the collection of Barbara and Richard Aeschlimann.
