Tamara Łempicka

09.09.2022-12.03.2023 Tamara Łempicka Remind an event Add to planer

The exhibition of Tamara Łempicka at the National Museum in Krakow will be an opportunity to enter the world of painting by one of the most remarkable artists of the twentieth century.

We will show over thirty paintings from museums and private collections in Europe and the United States of America. This selection will make it possible to trace Łempicka's work from the 1920s to the 1950s. From well-known portraits and nudes, which are today a symbol of art deco painting, through works on socially engaged subjects, still lifes, to abstract paintings that are little known to the public, created in the 1950s. Almost the only subject of Łempicka's paintings was man. She most often painted representatives of the artistic bohemia, aristocrats and representatives of the financial elite of Europe and the USA. Łempicka's paintings, striking the viewer at first sight with their characteristic style, hide in their ‘mannerism’ the sense of observing the world and people. Mainly through portraits, Łempicka created a gallery telling about the decadent world between world wars – the ‘crazy’ twenties and thirties and the world of Hollywood stars in the forties and fifties.

The exhibition will also show the photographic portraits of Łempicka made by outstanding photographers. It will be an excellent opportunity to confront Łempicka's self-creation in front of the lens with her painting vision.

The exhibition is created in close cooperation with the artist's great-granddaughter, Ms Marisa de Łempicka, thanks to whom we try to obtain works and archival materials from the Tamara de Łempicka Estate and other collections.
