This exhibition is dedicated to the books that were read in quiet alcoves in the home, a space that allowed readers to explore their private interests and deepen their knowledge, as well as to read for the sheer pleasure and entertainment of reading. Here we will find religious texts and travelogues spanning the 16th to 19th centuries as well as maps and atlases.
Examples of Polish and European fine literature and poetry are presented, along with the harbingers of great Romantic literature. We can also see works by the writers involved in the creation of the modern novel and works of epistolography, so popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. There will be no shortage of books published outside of the restrictions of the censorship of the day, often considered scandalous at the time.
