The work commemorates the 1794 battle between Tadeusz Ko\u015bciuszko and Russian forces. <em>Ko\u015bciuszko at Rac\u0142awice<\/em> is a monumental oil painting (465 \u00d7 897 cm), created in Matejko\u2019s characteristic Academic style. The work conveys a message of social equality. In 1888, it was purchased through contributions from Poles living under the three partitions and donated to the National Museum in Krak\u00f3w. Peasants, including those from villages near Krak\u00f3w, posed for the painting.
