{"id":28421,"date":"2026-05-06T08:08:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T08:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.mnk.pl\/wystawy\/mnk-the-wyspianski\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T07:43:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T07:43:34","slug":"display-portrait-of-a-woman-with-a-book","status":"publish","type":"wystawy","link":"https:\/\/mnk.pl\/en\/wystawy\/display-portrait-of-a-woman-with-a-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Display: Portrait of a Woman with a Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead size-small\">The EUROPEUM exhibition space presents a new acquisition of the National Museum in Krakow \u2013 an impressive portrait of a woman titled Portrait of a Woman with a Book (Dutch Patrician) and\u00a0probably painted by Willem van der Vliet.<\/p><p class=\"text size-small\">This 56-year-old woman \u2013 according to an inscription in the painting \u2013 with not a very beautiful austere face, dressed in a dark dress with white cuffs and a white ruff, with a white bonnet on her head, holding a book \u2013 probably a prayer book \u2013 in her right hand, is presumably a representative of one of the patrician families in Del- ft. The portrait is characterised by austerity and seriousness, simple composition drawing the viewer\u2019s attention to the sitter\u2019s face and hands and a limited colour palette \u2013 typical features of the portraits of the Dutch bourgeoisie from the 2nd half of the 1620s to the 1650s. It was probably painted by Willem van der Vliet, a student of Michiel van Miervelt (1567\u20131641), who worked in Delft almost all his life.<br><br><br>The painting was purchased by Jan Feliks Tarnowski at the Gallery in Dresden. In 1939, it was deposited at the National Museum in Krakow.
